What measures are recommended when a candidate has dyslexia?

In cases where a candidate with dyslexia is taking personality or cognitive tests in a recruitment setting, certain accommodations can support an accurate and fair assessment.

For personality tests, we recommend using a proxy who reads the questions or statements aloud while the candidate responds independently.

For cognitive tests, we recommend using spatial version only. A proxy should read the initial instructions aloud to ensure the candidate understands the tasks, then allow the candidate to complete the test on their own. For ACE we ask the candidates to approach the company if they have dyslexia.

The proxy can either be a company representative who assists on-site. This approach ensure transparency and minimises the risk of the proxy interfering in the actual answers. Another possibility is to use a friend or family member if the candidate takes the tests at home. This approach provides flexibility and supports the candidate’s comfort and confidence during the assessment process.

These recommendations are general and do not take into account the level of dyslexia, nor the technical tools, that some candidates with dyslexia have access to, to support them in general.
